Now that I’ve got the plain white design down pat, it’s time for variation! I’ve always been one to buck the trend, because let’s be serious, colours are way more fun. Magic is sometimes as dark, mysterious and beautiful as the night sky. Who needs white all the time? It makes me feel magical especially after being called a Fairy Godmother by one of my childhood friends who I was helping with her wedding dress fitting and makeup today. I always wanted to be magical…a Fairy Godmother to be exact, but these days, I would just really like to be magical. (And employed, I got two upcoming jobs today. Yay being a starving artist!)
“I may not be a horse whisperer, but I certainly can and do shout at unicorns.”
― Jarod Kintz
I really hope I’m going to be able to find the metal pendant again. It’s kind of perfect for what I need it for. Here’s to hoping but for now, they’re super limited edition!
“We are both lost
And we won’t be found.
She was my compass,
He was your map,
We’ve come too far to be turning back.
And we’ll sit on our single beds,
Nothing on our hearts and tears on our threads,
For we know the last unicorn is dead.” – Last Unicorn by Passenger
There’s so many things you wish you could be when you grow up as a kid that, as a adult, you start to lose faith in. Whether it’s an impossible dream or the reality just isn’t as shiny as it used to be. I really wanted wings when I was a kid and was absolutely crushed when I was told that it was impossible and that it just wasn’t going to happen. I cried to my Papa about it and he told me that if I wanted wings, I’d find a way to get my wings. Well Papa, I figured it out. Maybe not the wings bit, but the horn to be a unicorn.
If you’ve been following my blog lately you may have picked up on my obsession with unicorns and crafting. After about a week of mad sculpting, molding, casting, sanding, refining, redesigning, gluing and embellishing, I finally have it! My unicorn circlet! I’ve been seeing a lot of them floating around Etsy and Pintrest and really wanted one but they all seem to be too big or too expensive, so I made my own. Cast in plastic and customized. Not the polymer super sculpy I’ve been seeing a lot of that is way too heavy and would be a pain in the ass to reproduce over and over. A big shout out to Sam at Drunkin’ Fish Creations for the materials suggestions. So hopefully soon I’ll be able to have my Etsy shop up and running.
Ok, so I was never really good at chemistry. Actually, I also failed that class and took all tech classes later on in high school on purpose to avoid ever having to do chemistry again. Then I ended up in SPFX…it was all chemistry. Gotta love how ironic life came be sometimes. But, on the bright side, on about the third run I got the right mix for the plastic I was casting!
Unicorn horns and eyes here I come! There’s something ridiculously satisfying about looking at a finished product and KNOWING you did EVERYTHING from scratch. The sewing, the sculpting, the molding, the casting, the painting, the embellishing. Everything! Finally getting some use out of the old college training afterall.
It’s Monday morning. I’m not used to having nothing to do. It’s Monday morning, time to work. I don’t think I can handle going through all my boxes for the move. I don’t think my heart can handle it just yet especially after the incredibly ill-timed text I got from my Ex yesterday. He had four whole months to miss me, why now? Why when I’m finally putting all the pieces back together, does he decide to show up just to scatter them again?
So now it is RETREAT into the creating world. Of course this means more crime documentaries and forgetting that sunlight exists. For now, I’m just going to have to keep creating my own little world. It’s safer that way.
Gotta keep busy somehow because I seriously don’t feel like cleaning all the time.
Awww, I really do miss college!
Gotta keep making the magic.
I wanna smash your fears
And get drunken off your tears
Don’t you share your smile with anyone else but me
I wanna touch your heart
I wanna crush it in my hands
Make you plead and cry as you give up all the lies
We’re not lovers
But more than friends
Put a flame to every single word you ever said
No more crying
To get me through
I’ll keep dancing till the morning with somebody new
Tonight I’m getting over you
Everybody else seems to have nostalgic Thursday and I guess I’ve been quite nostalgic lately. It’s weird how things turn out when life takes you down random avenues. Back in college, I was training for SPFX makeup. If it hadn’t been for that course, I wouldn’t have been introduced to half the things I can do today. I’m so grateful for all the opportunities it has opened up for me and I wouldn’t have met Dawn and been introduced to my current job if it hadn’t been for my internship class.
I miss sculpting in class and all the fun projects we got to do. I mean, we made puppets all day who wouldn’t love that? I kind of miss working in a shop and that entire environment. All I’ve ever wanted was to create, to take an idea, a concept, a fantasy and make it real. That’s what it’s all about really. I miss being surrounded by all the mess that was the shop and best of all, friends who thought like you, were driven like you and who could pull together and make something impossible possible.
Take your passion and make it happen.
Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
And you’ll live as you’ve never lived before
Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
hear it, feel it, secretly posess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
-“Music of the Night” – Phantom of the Opera
Ok, so I’m a little bit of a Phantom of the Opera junkie. Legit. So in my mad crafting frenzy I managed to salvage another bra from the Goodwill bag. I’ve been loving all these skeleton hand bras that have been popping up all over Etsy but haven’t for the life of me been able to find a sparkly one! So off I scuttle with my bead glue and tweezers. What could be more fitting for a rave bra than the Music of the Night? Yeah, I’m a musical theatre geek shut up.
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night
Coming Up Next:
What could all this possibly be for?
So, the sun is shining. It’s a beautiful day. Perfect to hole myself up in the craft room.
I’ve been obsessed with a Misfits tshirt I got years ago. (And I mean years ago, I got it in high school.) It has skeleton hands (that glow in the dark) grabbing your boobs. That t-shirt is currently dying so in the spirit of it, I’ve been designing quiet a few things around it. First there came my pin up dress with the skeletons having sex on it. (Boning bones, get it?)
But it’s not like anything I do just stops when one project is done now does it? Soooo, Dawn was going through her closet, creating a huge Goodwill bag and was going to toss out a couple bras that still had the tags on them. I scoop them up and scurry off to the office with some bead glue and the left-over crystals from my unicorn shoes.
It’s hard to believe I used to blush whenever anyone said the word underwear eh? You have my mother and Nana to thank for that one. But I think it’s pretty cute no?
“Sweet lovely death
I am waiting for your breath
Come sweet death
One last caress
One last caress, sweet death
One last caress, sweet death”
– “Last Caress” – The Misfits
So what do you get one of your best friends who has been more than kind to you and has let you crash in her guest room for the past couple months and also happens to be your boss? Yeah, I thought so. Good question eh? I’m poor so there wasn’t anything crazy that I could buy so that leaves making something, but what? Her party was New Orleans themed so I was trying to go with that.
So it started with sculpy, an rough idea about a voodoo doll and gris gris and all that jazz after hours and hours of a sleepless night wasted on pintrest and Etsy.
Then it started to become more mermaid that voodoo or spirit doll, so I kinda had to go with that. Using nail polish to paint sculpy has, of late, turned out a lot better than expected. It gives more sparkle and more of a metallic finish. How magical.
I kinda went a little wild with the hair, any kind of funky wool I could find, which, luckily enough, my Mum happened to have a selection. (I’m quite enthralled with her new sewing room.) I was pulling inspiration from Sedna the sea witch, voodoo dolls, spirit dolls and mermaids And it turned into…Hurricane Katrina!
(What? It was New Orleans Themed.)
“Marriage to the sea. What would a prince not give to have such an elemental mistress?” – The Tudors, Season 3
“When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning
And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning
Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is torn
Look and see her how she sparkles, it’s the last unicorn”
– America “The Last Unicorn”
So, I’ve been a little bit obsessed with unicorns lately for no real apparent reason. So during one of my sleepless nights I found a pattern on etsy for a plushie unicorn. I’d made most of my toys and stuffed animals when I was younger and haven’t really touched on it in recent years. I have no idea why. It’s creating and sculpting just like any other medium so I decided to give it a try.
Fabricland was severely lacking in most fake furs so I had to improvise. I think it turned out better with the chocolate brown short fur. It gave a little more wiggle room for creativity. I think I may have drafted the pattern a little too big because I didn’t need that much seam allowance but it was only the first run. The pattern called for felt or faux suede for the hooves and inner ears but I didn’t have any so I just used some quilting scraps.
Sculpting the features was a lot easier than I anticipated. I guess once you have a basic idea of the mediums you’re using and what you want the final product to look like it’s a lot easier to manipulate your fabrics. I used primsacolor markers to shade the white fur to blend in with the scrap fabrics I used for the ears and the bottoms of the hooves.
I actually don’t know much about embroidery or felting so I just used sculpy to make the eyes and the horn. I think it gives it a little bit more character. I painted the horn with nail polish to give it more of a sparkly, metallic finish and I added some old false lashes to the eyes.
How cute is this little, as of yet still nameless guy? I love his little goat like features which makes him a little more medieval style as opposed to cartoony. He looks like a little baby! What do you think? Keep making unicorns?
Any ideas for names?
